Getting used to the ring
I have begun married life. It feels much like unmarried life although I now have jewelry to wear that I never wore before. I guess I could have claimed that I was unable to wear a ring because of health reasons and allergies to metal but since I had gone down to New York with Jeremy to get the rings I wanted to make a real effort to wear the ring. Wearing jewelry takes a lot of getting used to for me. I never managed to wear a watch consistently. The closest that I had to wearing jewelry is my glasses that I wear although I don't always need them to get by. I feel more comfortable with the glasses on than when they aren't on. So for the last two weeks I was always conscious of the ring on my finger. I had to fiddle with it, twirl it, and see how removable it was under conditions including rain, soapy showers, hot days, and in dry conditions. It is easiest to remove when soapy and this has led me to fear dropping it in the drain by accident. Now that it has been a while I tried a new experiment. I took the ring off when I went to the gym today. Today was the first day I took the initiative to get some exercise too. As I was biking I could feel the opposite of the original feeling when I first got the ring. Now I felt like something was missing with the ring off. My hand felt too light and I felt amputated. It's back on now and I am feeling like it is just melding into my nervous system .
Sarah is trying to change her name. She is funny about it because we have a family reunion of the Carvey's that will be happening during the July 4th weekend. Sarah set this trip as her deadline to have her name changed. Now while it is admirable to set a deadline for anything what is comical is that the deadline includes airplane tickets in a person's name and the new and improved security policies by airports to protect themselves from potential terrorists. So Sarah is scrambling to meet the deadline and while the ticket for me was unfortunately registered in the name of Cam Housman (maybe a potential name for a son after Cameron from Ferris Beuller's day off), Sarah's ticket is in the name of Sarah Housman, a person who doesn't exist yet. So yesterday I went to city hall and picked-up the marriage certificate so that she could go through a wild spaz to get the name change paperwork taken care of just in time for the flight. Unfortunately I didn't look carefully enough at the hand typed certificate since it lists Mrs. Daniel Housman as having been born in 1973. While I wouldn't mind having married someone my own age (31 going on 32), Sarah is still 29 and wasn't too pleased to see the certificate making her older. I yelled at her for lying to me about her age but she kept-up her story that it was really the folks at city hall. On the way back from City Hall I stopped at the library. I had thought that the library was an archiaic concept but actually there were people in the library and books! I was even interested in borrowing a book on CD which was 7 hours of unpublished Douglas Adams work but the line was so long to get checked-out and get a library card that I gave up.
